II Corinthians 12:9-10

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities... for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

Scar Care and Sunburn

I'm so excited that it's finally summer time, and that means lots of swimming and spending time outside. Swimming is so relaxing on my back, and it keeps me in shape at the same time.

But for me, summer also means sunburn... unfortunately. Usually I use a sun stick only on my scar, and it works really well-- except when I forget to use it. I accidentally left my back exposed to the sun for about an hour, and I paid the consequences for it.

My scar was my only concern. So I did my research, and I'm no expert, but this is what I found.

Scar tissue is more sensitive than normal skin. That's why it's so important to keep sunscreen on. Burning can also discolor the scar in some cases.

Basically, you want to be very careful (whether you have a scar or not). I haven't heard from anywhere that it causes any serious effects, but you should still take good care of your incision. My scar is fine, but I'm not going to make that mistake again!

Lesson learned. Use sunscreen.

  1. I love your blog & video Katie!!! Found it by a Godwink when looking at another scoli-family friends CaringBridge site (Sasha & Julia) Thank you for the e-mail reply. I try to reach out to other parents of scoli patients and have bookmarked your blog to share! As noted in my e-mail, I'm the mom of Alex, who is 6 months post-op. He has been blessed beyond measure by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children for the past 8 years! (as have we and other patients who have received free treatment since 1921!) May God continue to richly bless you in you daily life and as you reach out to others!

  3. I have been undergoing procedures for roto-scoliosis since 93 when I was put in a brace. I had my first back sugery in 1994. Since then I have had 3 more. My last one being in 2009. Since the scoliosis, I have developed, degenitive disc disease (ddd). I'd like to be in contact with more who struggle with this, but this is the first time I have seen anything like this, so I don't know quite what I'm doing on here. You can find me on Facebook. Melissa Hockenberry from PA or email me at melissamarie2001@yahoo.com. I'd love to talk to you.
